“I think when you’re an artist, you want to put your stuff out there just because of the exuberance of being creative, and then you feel bad about yourself. So I see that in Wayne’s work.” Matt Groening
“Beauty is embarrassing.”
“It’s beautiful out here. It’s so beautiful it hurts my feelings.” Wayne White
Colleen shared this trailer for Beauty Is Embarrassing on Facebook the other day, and I immediately (well…mentally) leapt up and shouted “when does this movie come out?!” (it premieres at the SXSW Film Festival in March). I’ve been criticized before for being “too broken” — just do your thing already and stop talking about how it makes you feel. But here it is…Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons (and a dude!) mentioning this crazy phenomenon. How you can be so creative and inspired to do something for others, and then as soon as you put it out there, you feel…terrible.
I don’t know what it is. I just know that I’ve been blaming myself for being a sensitive weirdo, and now I don’t have to. And I hope this film escapes SXSW and comes into my loving arms sometime.
(If you can’t see the trailer from where you stand, go here.)

My favorite line is: “It’s so beautiful it hurts my feelings”. I wonder how much truth is in that – aren’t we always most hurt by the things we feel we could never be?
That IS a great line. Also, I must have those eyeball dumbbells!
Knowing I’m not the only one to feel terrible for making something once I’m finished–makes me feel less terrible.
Keep on being a delicate flower! It’s like water for other delicate flowers!
I like picturing myself as a watering can. Kelly, you are my metaphor muse.
